What are some really good poets or poems about life and love?
Q. Basically, I've gotten really into poetry lately. But I don't know any good poems, or poets. What are some good poems/poets about life, love, or other deep things. Also, not necessarily any long poems. I like them really short and deep. Do you know anything good? Thanks!

A. My dear, I love you so much, You have given me such a thrill with your smile, your perfect sense of style, your cutest laughter I get to hear after I make another mistake. You make me want to make myself into a better man, the best person I can be, to be with you, in this love so true.

How many professional poets, song writers, etc. use rhyming dictionaries and computer programs to help them?
Q. I'm a poet and I've always been tempted to use something to better refine my poems but I also always thought it was wrong, kind of like cheating so I never did... I was just wondering how professional poets and the poetry community at large felt about that stuff.

A. There's nothing wrong with a rhyming dictionary. I confess I use it sometimes, but it's better to write from the heart.

A. Nothing's Changed is a poem written by Tatamkhula Arfrika. He grew up in South Africa, in an area known as District Six, which is an area where people of different races lived in harmony. However the apartheid laws of the 1960's changed this, as they forced white and black people to live separately and have different rules. Afrika also lived to see the fall of apartheid, and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. The poem is a reflection of these different stages in his life.

What are some good, modern poets of today?
Q. I've always had a pretty neutral opinion of poetry. Didn't not like it, but didn't exactly have an affinity for it. I guess that's because the poetry we get to read in school is either horribly boring or the occasional good Frost poem gets read over and over and dissected so much that you start to hate it. Well I've recently taken a creative writing class featuring poem and we read some great stuff in the class. I was just wondering if there were any great, modern poets out there that I have yet to encounter. It would be great if you could recommend me some to read!

A. geoffrey hill's 'september song' and 'for the plantagenet kings' are almost as good as anything ever written in english. les murray's 'in phrygia birthplace of embroidery' and 'the breach' are as good. james fenton wrote a wonderful piece about vietnam (he was with the viet cong). but i'd have a better idea of what to recommend to you if i knew what you liked already.

How is Anna Akhmatova different and similar to other poets?
Q. I have to compare and contrast Anna Akhmatova to other poets, but I am not real sure about what to write.
Asked by me3mae - Fri Nov 14 13:29:42 2008 - Books & Authors - 1 Answers - Comments
A. There is a short biog of her at the link below which may give you some ideas. One of the ways to contrast her/her work is that the vast majority of poets have lived and produced their work with relative "freedom of speech". She lived a lot of her life and produced much of her verse under the repressive Stalinist regime. She had to be very careful about what was seen by the authorities - in particular trying to publish "Requiem" in Russia (or anywhere as her work) was a big NO NO until after Stalin's death

Can somebody recommend good contemporary poets?
Q. I don't often read contemporary poetry, but I have to for a class. I was wondering if you anybody knew any contemporary poets whose styles resemble or are reminiscent of Emily Dickinson, Whitman, and/or Rilke? In regards to Rilke, any poet that writes about the esoteric, the divine, and such. Thanks
