What is the difference in writing poetry over writing a song?
Q. Is it just the fact that most songs have a chorus? I tend to write in between. I write sophisticated poetry with chorus' (is choruses a word?) Is there a difference?
Asked by Gigi "Superman" Buffon - Mon May 30 10:31:59 2011 - Poetry - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Choruses is a word, but regardless you wouldn't say chorus' as the plural form of chorus. Apostrophes are either for contractions (like "can + not = can't") or possessives (like "this is the chorus's original song", in which the song belongs to the chorus). They're not for plurals. Anyway it all depends on what you want to do. If you write something as a poem, it's a poem. If you write it as a song, it's a song. If you write it as a mix, it's whatever you choose. However, there are some things that work better in a song than they do on paper, such as simplicity, abstraction, and lots of repetition. If you have those things in your writing it's probably best to make it a song. And there are some things that work better… [cont.]

What are some tips on writing good poetry?
Q. I love poetry, but I am not a very good writer. Any tips on how to write good poetry?
Asked by StarkidForever - Tue Apr 27 18:59:49 2010 - Poetry - 5 Answers - Comments

A. The best thing you can do to help your own writing is read lots of good poetry. Read the great poets of the past, and read a wide variety of the poetry being published today. Don't read just one kind of poetry. Stretch your imagination by reading both formal verse (poetry that uses rhyme and meter) and free verse. You'll be amazed how much your own writing improves as you expose yourself to the work of more experienced poets. A couple of things you'll notice about good poetry: Concrete images are better than abstractions. Instead of making statements about "love," "life," "truth," "justice," and so on, write about things that readers can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. Specific details are better… [cont.]

What is the difference between poetry and prose?
Q. I was just listening to a video about the department of education ramping up the learning standards for schools. They said that by 4th grade children should know the difference between poetry and prose. Well, I'm in the 9th grade and I have never even heard of prose. Can you tell me what it is please?
Asked by David - Wed Mar 10 19:28:32 2010 - Poetry - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Prose is the most typical form of language. The English word 'prose' is derived from the Latin prosa, which literally translates as 'straight-forward.' Prose lacks the more formal structure of a poem, in the guise of either a meter or rhyme, but instead comprises full sentences, which then constitute paragraphs

What are some literary magazines that pay for poetry?
Q. Most of my poetry is thoughtful, emotional, or dark, so please consider this. I'm having a very hard time finding any magazine or ezine that pays for poetry. All of your help would be appreciated! A note I would like to add--I do not plan on making a living by selling poetry (I know for a fact that it will never do any good if I try that). I simply have some poetry I would like to publish and be paid for my efforts. I also understand it will take time.

A. _Poetry_ pays $10 a line, I believe; _The New Yorker_ pays more. People work for years to get in these magazines. You can't make a living from writing poems even if you are one of the most widely published poets in the world.

What are the requirements to teach poetry at the university level?
Q. Assuming the candidate has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing and an Ed D in Education, would this be sufficient to teach poetry at the university level? The candidate has only taken one graduate-level course in poetry and has a small publishing company the specializes in poetry.
Asked by Creativity Coaching - Sat Aug 29 12:21:54 2009 - Higher Education (University +) - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Most universities would require a Ph D in the area that you teach. They would also expect you to be published. No to publish, but to be published. Community colleges don't require Ph Ds at all, so I would try there. The fact that you do have a Ph D, any Ph D, would give you an advantage over other candidates for teaching positions.

A. Start at the bottom of your list. Here's my suggested reading list. The ancient Greeks: Homer; Sappho; Aesop (not a poet, but a genius of the metaphor). Then try some French from Voltaire and Victor Hugo. The great English poets next: Rudyard Kipling and George Bernard Shaw, for example. Then finish with Walt Whitman, ee cummings and Emily Dickinson.

Asked by SoyDeChristo - Thu Jan 25 21:01:13 2007 - Books & Authors - 3 Answers - Comments

A. I think that is great that you want to read more poetry. Your best bet is to go to your local library and check out some poetry books. I love poetry and that is how I first discovered some of my favorites. If you like confessional type poetry you may want to check out Anne Sexton or Sylvia Plath. When I was in high school I loved TS Eliot. I think everyone should have Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman and The Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters. Billy Collins is a current poet who is very fun to read and easy to understand. The Beat Poets such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg from the 50s are really interesting. Anthologies are always good. Definitely check out a big fat one so you can really sample a wide variety. Happy discovering! [cont.]

What are the significances of refrains in poetry?
Q. Why are refrains used in poetry (Specifically the pantoum and the villanelle) and what purpose do they serve? How are they significant to the poetry?
Asked by mexi44cool - Sat Mar 20 22:04:35 2010 - Poetry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. refrains are used a lot in art in general for different reasons one being that it makes the piece more integrated and whole, kind of like balancing color in a painting by using the same color. Medieval and Renaissance villanelles were simple ballad-like songs which of course used repetition and refrains to create rhythm, which is also what poetry attempts to do by using the same device, including the refrain structure in pantoums.

Can poetry be categorized as a performing art?
Q. I have an oral presentation due soon that requires us to research and present a form of performing art. I was thinking of doing poetry. Can someone help me out with this? Or any other *interesting* suggestions of a performing art?
Asked by Cassidy Curiosity - Mon Jul 7 07:47:47 2008 - Performing Arts - 4 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Back in ancient Greece poetry recitation was a competetive performance art that could earn prizes comparable to the awards won by olympic atheletes. In the 60s, beat poets performed poetry, including important authors such as Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. Today poetry recitation is a performance art in forensics teams in high schools, and you'll often see poets performing in coffee shops and stuff. To me poetry recitation is like playing an instrument, where you take some ink on paper and you bring it to life so that everyone can enjoy it. I mean, writing poetry is an art as writing music is, but the oral interpretation adds a whole extra level to the experience.

A. Take a Haiku, it has a 5-7-5 line rhyme scheme. It requires the poet to speak quickly and to the point. Free Rhyme makes the poet speak his/or her mind and Rhyming poems require the poet to think carefully in the poem.
