A good suggestion for a contemporary non-fiction book for a high schooler?
Q. It has to be contemporary non-fiction, though it cannot be a memoir. Our teacher prefers it to be over or around 250-300 pages. Any suggestions are welcome. It's a tenth grade honors English class. Some books I've found interesting are txting and The World Without Us, but before I choose I'd like to see what some other options are. Thanks in advance!

What is a good non-fiction book that's good for school projects?
Q. I need a non-fiction book for school but I can't find one! I'm a bit of a history fan, but I don't like books that drag on. I've tried looking in the Library but all I could find were biographies on Kylie Minogue and Celine Dion and stuff like that... You can imagine my dilemma. Please help me!

A. How about something on the La Amistad Mutiny. It is very interesting and will probably impress your teacher that you tackled such a subject. I recomend the book, 'Mutiny in the Amistad', by Howard Jones. It is very good. I've read it several times myself and it was the main source for the Hollywood movie back in the 1990s. It is also less than 220 pages of story. It can easily be read in a couple of days.

What are some of the best non-fiction books?
Q. I need to select a non-fiction book for school to read. I need to talk about the usage of language to express the charactors in the book so I am asuming it has to be a novel or some sort of story. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!

A. Novel & Non-Fiction are opposite terms. A novel is made up by the writer. Non-fiction is an account of actual events & people. Try: John Adams by David McCullough 1776 by the same author. The founding fathers were indeed giants. The Blind Side by Michael Lewis A great story, even if you aren't a football fan Highest Duty by Chesley (Sully) Sullenberger THe ultimate maintaining your cool under pressure story, landing a plane in the Hudson River.

How do you add a little bit of Fiction into a Non-Fiction story?
Q. Like if i have a Non-Fiction story that i have wrote how do i add in some fiction to the story?
Asked by Mika - Thu Aug 28 19:52:31 2008 - - 1 Answers - Comments
A. The movie "Adaption" explains this. If the store is non-fiction you already have a story, but it may not be very exciting. So look for the story behind the story. What you don't know. Eg, a man kills another man. That is what you know, but why? If you don't know the why then you can add some fiction to explain the why. Eg, the back story. Or maybe there is a gap in the story, so you can add you own story to fill in the gap.

What are some really good non-fiction books for teenage girls, around 14, would like to read?
Q. My teacher is making us do a weekly reading log where we have to read an hour a week and do a one-sentence summery on the book. But the thing is, it has to be NON-fiction. And know no books that meet my interest in non-fiction. Some things I like are Harry Potter, The Clique series, and the Twilight books. Anything similar?
Asked by Logan - Thu Nov 13 22:04:33 2008 - - 8 Answers - Comments
A. Okay, this book is nothing like the ones you suggested, but I like the books you like, so maybe you'll like this as much as I. It's called Running With Scissors, by Augusten Burroughs, and it's a memoir or autobiography, therefore non-fiction, and it's absolutely hilarious. If you give it a shot, you'd probably enjoy it, I read it when I was your age. Also, there are plenty of books on vampires that are non-fiction, or you could even read a "guide" to Twilight or Harry Potter, those are also non-fiction, for example. Hope that helps.

What increases your vocabulary to a greater extent, non-fiction or fiction based books?
Q. By non-fiction, I mean Wikipedia and such.

A. By far, non fiction since Dickens and Frank Norris as well as John Steinbeck are old, boring to some extent but have great vocab. If you give a 2 year old( who probably does not know how to read) a Harry Potter book, they will get it since the level of difficulty of the vocan is very low and that is why teachers discourage students to read those kinds of books.

Is writing an autobiography a good book for my first book or should I write a non-fiction first?
Q. I want to write a book but I'm not sure if I should write an autobiography or a non-fiction book as my first book. I was told that I could write a good book already by some samples I've already written but now its time to write a book and I'm clueless. Also what book do you think would sell more autobiography or non-fiction?
Asked by kibbz - Tue Aug 31 08:19:05 2010 - - 11 Answers - Comments
A. First of all, people need to learn what non-fiction is, as a few people on here clearly think that a novel is non-fiction. It isn't. 'Non-fiction' = anything that's true. 'Fiction' = anything you made up. So, your question doesn't really make sense, because an autobiography IS non-fiction. However, be aware that nobody is interested in an autobiography if they haven't already heard of the subject. Unless you have had a remarkably exceptional life - and I mean remarkably, not just that a few interesting things happened to you - then nobody will buy your autobiography because they don't know who you. You don't become well-known through an autobiography. You become well-known, and THEN you write an autobiography.

Q. I love reading non-fiction and philosophy, but I get very distracted with references and end up reading a whole mess of different things, then end up getting frustrated. How does one stay focused on one book rather than unfocused on way too many?

A. Try hitting up a subject-based anthology of essays rather than delving straight into a master philosopher's book right off the bat; that way, you can build up a base of knowledge on certain subjects with views from many different philosophers, which will, in the long run, save you from having to look up the endless references. For instance, if you were interested in aesthetics, you might try Alex Neill's The Philosophy of Art: Readings Ancient and Modern, which is outstanding both as a diverse and full exploration of the philosophy of art and as a primer for such great philosophers as Plato, Kant, Hume, Nietszche, and Heidegger, all of whom have essays in the volume.
