Culture

Culture (from the Latin cultura stemming from colere, meaning "to cultivate") is a term that has many different meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture" in Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. However, the word "culture" is most commonly used in three basic senses:

  • Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture
  • An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning
  • The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group

When the concept first emerged in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe, it connoted a process of cultivation or improvement, as in agriculture or horticulture. In the nineteenth century, it came to refer first to the betterment or refinement of the individual, especially through education, and then to the fulfillment of national aspirations or ideals. In the mid-nineteenth century, some scientists used the term "culture" to refer to a universal human capacity. For the German nonpositivist sociologist Georg Simmel, culture referred to "the cultivation of individuals through the agency of external forms which have been objectified in the course of history".

In the twentieth century, "culture" emerged as a concept central to anthropology, encompassing all human phenomena that are not purely results of human genetics. Specifically, the term "culture" in American anthropology had two meanings: (1) the evolved human capacity to classify and represent experiences with symbols, and to act imaginatively and creatively; and (2) the distinct ways that people living in different parts of the world classified and represented their experiences, and acted creatively. Following World War II, the term became important, albeit with different meanings, in other disciplines such as cultural studies, organizational psychology and management studies.

What do you think about preserving your own culture?
Q. I just answered a question about interracial dating, and one response gave an answer the suggested they would have a problem if their child dated outside of their culture because they believe in preserving their culture. I myself don't buy into that kind of thing and to me interracial dating is a great thing. I would definitely marry interracially. But I want to know from others. Is preserving your culture something you think about when dating/marrying? Do you care about it? Some use that argument to speak against interracial marriages. What say you?

A. I'll admit I used to be very ethnocentric (I'm East Indian btw) and never considered dating men from different nationalities. But I decided to give it a shot and starting dating this white guy I really liked, a year and a half we're still together and going strong, considering getting married :)

How different is American culture from English?
Q. I plan on moving to somewhere in America in the future, not sure where yet but yeah. I know that different states are insanely different, but how is English culture different or similar to the culture and lifestyle of different states around America?

A. I might not be qualified to answer, even though were I live their are a lot of Brits ( I hope by using that word it doesn't offend you) and I have barely seen your culture. Wikipedia is surprisingly accurate a friend told me. I do know however brits are very popular, the accent just makes people feel warm and very sophisticated. People here tend to not understand so much from outside cultures and nations unless they are new immigrants or part of a very higher class. I hope this link can help you in your search for the answer. If you do move here, I wish you much luck and guidance in the nation of mine and probably yours too. :D Good luck oh and also I've noticed Americans can be more religious than British people. Hope this one helps you… [cont.]
