What bible quotes are used to back up a Roman Catholics view towards banning infertility treatments?
Q. This is for an essay, I am not having children. Roman catholics ban fertility treatments because -they involve fertilization outside the womb, and god intended sex to be the only method of procreation. -processes using IVF involve embroyos being wasted, similar to abortion. But why do they say these things? What bible passage support this? I've done alot of research, I just need a bible passage.

A. The teachings of the Roman Catholic Church don't just come straight out of the Bible like some other Christians. You can't always find a Bible verse that specifically says something is wrong. Instead of asking people on Yahoo Answers this kind of question and risk getting a bunch of uneducated opinions and rude comments about the Catholics, why don't you do some real research? There are plenty of books and stuff out there about Catholic sexual ethics that can explain this a lot better than random strangers on the internet. Is this what passes for research these days?! Edit: See, I told you you would get people insulting Catholic views instead of actually answering your question.

How long does the Bible say to wait before having sex after giving birth?
Q. I just had a baby 5 weeks ago and am curious what the bible says about having sex. I know their are a specific # of days it actually says but am not sure where to find them in the bible, but I have heard it before.

A. There is a difference depending on if it is a boy or girl child, as giving birth to a girl child is seen as being more unclean. I think I can find the passage on that to back up my claim, give me a minute or two. Here it is: Leviticus 12 Purification After Childbirth 1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3 On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter,… [cont.]

How do you feel about the Bible being an accurate resource?
Q. We know that the Bible is full of contradictions and also impossibilities (Noah's ark, etc.). So what is your conviction about this> (a) We need to study and consider everything that is written there in order to make a decision about the validity of same. (b) I believe that everything that is written in the Bible is the absolute and unfailing word of God and that we should live our lives accordingly. (c) I believe that living my life strictly according to what is printed in the Bible is bound to result in absolute and total frustration.
Asked by troymariner - Wed Jan 27 13:31:05 2010 - - 7 Answers - Comments

A. (c) is most valid of the choices available, since I have seen many examples of it close at hand. I have already done (a) when I was a boy and know the Bible is invalid. My oldest sister claims to go along with (b), but she ignores parts of it whenever it cramps her style.

A. The recipienta s gender is irrelevant. It depends whether it is simple a gift or to be used for Bible study. If a gift then any version will do. The NIV would make the easiest reading. If for Bible study may be a Thompsons Chain Reference version would be the most use full.

How could a Christian justify the Bible saying that the earth is flat?
Q. I'm a fairly new Christian, but I've never considered this before: The Bible does not specifically claim that the earth is flat but it is strongly hinted in several places. It is also rarely hinted at that the earth is round, or a sphere, etc. So if the Bible is God's word, how could a Christian justify the Bible's claims of our earth being flat, when God created earth? Surely God should know that the earth is round, and so this should be said in the Bible?

A. You have been misinformed about what the Bible says. Over 2700 years ago God inspired Isaiah to write this about the earth: (Isaiah 40:22) There is One who is dwelling above the circle of the earth, the dwellers in which are as grasshoppers, the One who is stretching out the heavens just as a fine gauze, who spreads them out like a tent in which to dwell, And this was long before explorers like Christopher Colombus helped us see that the earth is indeed round.

A. An excellent book to start for anyone who wants to know the Bible is called, "Living by the Book". If you e-mail me I will give you as many resources as you want. Most of it is free. I would be more than happy to help you with anything. I need to use this seminary training for something. ;-) edit-- Regardless what your experience with the Bible is, read, read, read. Ask God to enlighten you to the truth of scripture and keep reading. There are so many resources available to you, (some good some not so much) that if you are serious you can get a very solid foundation for free. It is very hard work I will warn you.

How is it possible for a bible to be absolute authority?
Q. This does not make sense. When people read a scripture text they will interpret it in different ways because we are unique in character and life experience, so we will judge and analyze it and observe different moral ethics. People naturally form subjective opinions but if you dismiss everyone else and uphold the bible as absolute moral authority in the end this makes you morally wrong to put yourself above other humans and elevate yourself to Godlike status. If you are saying everyone is wrong for not all observing the bible in exactly the same way then God made a mistake to make us with our different minds and capabilities therefore he is not devine and perfect.

A. The bible says: However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT) this is why i went over to the dark side...LOL

How come the Bible is the downfall of many denominations of Christianity?
Q. Like in Mormonism, they teach something about Christ that Paul doesnt preach. In Catholcism, they teach something about Mary that the bible didn't teach, in certain sects of Evangelism, their own preachers are flithy rich, and lie, and the bible preaches against that. And there are many more. So why are so many denominations, who are supposed to be based on the teachings of the Bible, not in line with the bible??

A. It's doing the work God intended it to do! "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of sol and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12). The Bible is so written that our motives are exposed. The way we handle the word of God shows whether we are prepared to "let God be found true, though every man be found a liar" or not (Rom. 3:4). Only when we receive the word of God is it "effectively at work in you who believe" (1 Thess. 2:13). Those who try to use it for their own ends are exposed as frauds. They can never see that, of course! They will argue till they are blue in… [cont.]

How can you understand the Bible without a human to teach you?
Q. In talking to many people over the years, people keep telling me that all you need is the Bible and to ask the holy spirit to help you understand the Bible. Nothing else. Couple of problematic questions with this line of reasoning: If you were to rely on your own understanding, would you not have many different sects teaching tons of different understandings of the Bible? If everybody had the holy spirit guiding them, would they not all have come to the same conclusions regarding what the Bible actually teaches? Everybody who is searching for truth of the Bible are all sincere in their search. Why do they not all believe the same thing if they all asked the holy spirit to guide them? So, can you understand the Bible without a human to… [cont.]

A. It is important to know that the King James Version is an (Old) English Translation of the Latin Vulgate, which was a translation from the original Greek. Any versions that use the original Greek as their source are going to be less prone to error than a translation of a translation. There are many examples of King James translations where the translators just got it wrong. Now, I happen to like the NIV - it was a collaborative effort of many scholars using the original (and/or oldest) Greek Manuscripts available and when these old manuscripts differ, the NIV tells you so. The only challenge with the NIV is that it adds a LOT of words. The intent is to make it easier to read, but the translators did take some license that, in some cases,… [cont.]

If for appearance, I am probably not your guy. If for reading, here's my standard answer, but you can e-mail me for a more interactive discussion. OK, here's my "what bible should I pick" answer: 1st, I'll assume that you are not a member of a sect that demands using the King James Version (KJV) or any other particular version. (Unfortunately, most of these sects do not actually use the whole KJV.) At this stage you want to decide what your bible should contain. A. Hey there, Lana makes some interesting points but I disagree - there's a LOT more research on why some people are gay and lesbian. There's no evidence that homosexuality is a learned behaviour or a psychological disorder, and plenty that suggests it's biological. For example, there are some fun facts like gay men are much more likely to be left handed than straight men. How do social theories account for that? Did we learn that at gay school?! Come on! :-) As for the sexual orientation of scientists - is that less biased than attempts by one Christian scientist recently to "prove" that you can change someones sexual orientation? How is morality based on the Bible, if you have to use your own morals to interpret the Bible?
Q. Many laws in the Bible are said to be null after the new covenant. But some are still held as valid. As far as I can tell, this is pretty much based on what people are comfortable with.
